An Outer Gap Model of High-Energy Emission from Rotation-Powered Pulsars
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe a refined calculation of high energy emission from rotationpowered pulsars based on the Outer Gap model of Cheng, Ho & Ruderman (1986a,b). In this calculation, vacuum gaps form in regions near the speed-oflight cylinder of the pulsar magnetosphere along the boundary between the closed and open field line zones. We have improved upon previous efforts to model the spectra from these pulsars (e. g. Cheng, et al. 1986b; Ho 1989) by following the variation in particle production and radiation properties with position in the outer gap. Curvature, synchrotron and inverse-Compton scattering fluxes vary significantly over the gap and their interactions via photon-photon pair production build up the radiating charge populations at varying rates. We have also incorporated an approximate treatment of the transport of particle and photon fluxes between gap emission zones. These effects, along with improved computations of the particle and photon distributions, provide very important modifications of the model gamma-ray flux. In particular, we attempt to make specific predictions of pulse profile shapes and spectral variations as a function of pulse phase and suggest further extensions to the model which may provide accurate computations of the observed high energy emissions. Gamma Rays from Rotation-powered Pulsars
The seven known gamma-ray pulsars represent a very small fraction of the more than 1000 presently known radio pulsars, yet they can give us valuable information about pulsar particle acceleration and energetics. Although the theory of acceleration and high-energy emission in pulsars has been studied for over 25 years, the origin of the pulsed gamma rays is a question that remains unanswered. Ch...

We study the γ-ray emissions from an outer-magnetospheric gap around a rotating neutron star. Migratory electrons and positrons are accelerated by the electric field in the gap to radiate copious γ-rays via curvature process. Some of these gamma-rays materialize as pairs by colliding with the X-rays in the gap, leading to a pair production cascade. Imposing a gap closure condition that a single...
متن کاملPulsar High-energy Emission from the Polar Cap and Slot Gap
Forty years after the discovery of rotation-powered pulsars, we still do not understand many aspects of their pulsed emission. In the last few years there have been some fundamental developments in acceleration and emission models. I will review both the basic physics of the models as well as the latest developments in understanding the high-energy emission of rotation-powered pulsars, with par...

I will review the latest developments in understanding the high-energy emission of rotation-powered pulsars and magnetically-powered Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) and Soft Gamma-Ray Repeaters (SGRs). These fields have been extremely active in the last few years, both observationally and theoretically, driven partly by new X-ray data from Chandra, XMM-Newton and RXTE. At the same time, the Park...
متن کاملGamma-Ray Pulsars: Models and Predictions
Pulsed emission from 7-ray pulsars originates inside the magnetosphere, from radiation by charged particles accelerated near the magnetic poles or in the outer gaps. In polar cap models, the high energy spectrum is cut off by magnetic pair production above an energy that is dependent on the local magnetic field strength. While most young pulsars with surface fields in the range B = 101_ 1013 G ...
